Short sidelined with injury during Jamaica training
Australia has revealed its lineup for the initial T20I against the West Indies, with Mitchell Owen poised for his international debut and Jake Fraser-McGurk rejoining the team as an opener. This match is scheduled to take place later today.
However, the squad has faced an obstacle as all-rounder Matt Short has been ruled out of the five-match series. He sustained a minor side strain while training in Jamaica.
Young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been called up to the squad to fill the void. He is slated to commence the innings in the series’ opening game.
The injury occurred during a training session in Jamaica, prior to the start of the series. Following a medical evaluation, Short was excused from the squad and will return home for recuperation.
It is anticipated that he will regain fitness in time for Australia’s upcoming white-ball series against South Africa, which is set to commence on August 10 in Darwin.
Fraser-McGurk, who was initially on standby after not being selected, is stepping in, having already substituted Spencer Johnson.
The 23-year-old batter’s record includes seven T20I appearances, during which he has accumulated 113 runs with a strike rate of 143.03.
Several seasoned players, such as Travis Head, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, are being rested for this series.
The five-match T20I series between Australia and the West Indies is scheduled to commence on July 20 in Kingston, Jamaica.
The Australian team is set to compete against the West Indies in five T20I matches, taking place in both Jamaica and St Kitts.
