Poirier Admits Holloway’s Performance Surpassed Expectations

NEW ORLEANS: Despite an intense battle in his concluding UFC bout against Max Holloway at the Smoothie King Centre on Saturday, Dustin Poirier was unable to secure a victory.

The contest featured an electrifying exchange in the final 15 seconds of Round 5, with Holloway and Poirier, who is retiring, trading powerful blows.

Holloway, the lightweight champion, emerged victorious by a unanimous decision, with the three judges scoring the match 48-47, 49-46, and 49-46.

In a display of respect, Holloway acknowledged Poirier, a Louisiana native, after winning, especially considering his previous losses in the first two encounters of their series. This win occurred during what was Poirier’s final MMA appearance.

Holloway recognized Poirier as a formidable opponent and encouraged the audience to applaud his achievements.

“He’s the baddest man, without a doubt. Show your appreciation for Dustin Poirier,” Holloway remarked.

Holloway initiated an early advantage with a first-round knockdown, nearly finishing Poirier (30-10), yet the 36-year-old fighter demonstrated resilience.

During the post-fight discussion, Poirier, although noticeably fatigued in the fourth round, expressed his surprise at the continued sharpness of Holloway’s striking, despite Holloway being a former featherweight champion.

Poirier stated that he had anticipated a more forceful approach from Holloway, admitting the difficulty in facing him head-on.

“I thought his strikes would have been a bit more forceful, but he was still very effective,” Poirier commented.

“He presents a tough challenge when he’s in front of you. He’s skilled, clever, and quick. He holds the (BMF) title. I deeply respect Max; he’s genuinely a good person.”
