Russell to Conclude International Career in T20I Series Against Australia
West Indies’ dynamic all-rounder, Andre Russell, pinpointed his pivotal innings against India in the 2016 ICC T20 World Cup semi-final in Mumbai as the most cherished moment of his international journey.
In an interview with Cricket West Indies, Russell reflected on that defining moment as the zenith of his career.
“Without a doubt, the 2016 World Cup stands out, specifically that semi-final clash against India. Lendl Simmons and I guided the team to victory, building on the foundation set by our fellow batsmen,” Russell stated.
“Chasing a target exceeding 190 in that semi-final held in India, amidst overwhelming support for the home team, naturally added pressure. However, the pitch was conducive for batting.
The collective confidence within our team and the quality of batsmen yet to come instilled in me the assurance to perform my role effectively,” he further commented.
Russell also shared his sentiments regarding the emotional highs of securing two T20 World Cups with the West Indies, emphasizing the enduring impact of those memories.
“Winning two World Cups evokes unparalleled emotions. The morning after the final, one might wake up after only a couple of hours of sleep.
Yet, feeling completely refreshed, driven by the desire to immerse oneself in online content, reliving those cherished moments and reading the positive feedback,” he expressed.
He acknowledged that the prospect of retirement evokes conflicting emotions, particularly when browsing social media tributes and messages from fans.
“Witnessing the outpouring of support on social media platforms evokes strong emotions,” Russell admitted.
“However, with my decision firmly in place, I believe I have contributed sufficiently to conclude my international career.”
The 37-year-old will bid farewell to international cricket on home soil, participating in his final two T20Is against Australia scheduled for July 20 and 22 at Sabina Park in Kingston, Jamaica.
Expressing his thoughts on concluding his career at his home ground, Russell depicted it as an ideal conclusion.
“It’s an amazing sentiment. From my initial visit to Sabina Park as a child to stepping onto the field, absorbing the atmosphere, and observing the stands, and now.
I’ve accomplished a great deal in cricket over the past few years, giving my utmost in every opportunity while representing the West Indies.”
“I believe this venue and series against a formidable opponent like Australia offer the perfect setting to conclude my international career,” he concluded.
Notably, Russell formally announced his retirement from international cricket last week.
Russell, who commenced his international career with the West Indies in 2010, will participate in his concluding international matches during the upcoming home T20I series against Australia.
According to CWI, the all-rounder is slated to feature in the initial two T20Is, hosted at Sabina Park on July 20 and 22. Matthew Forde will substitute him for the remaining three fixtures.
It is worth mentioning that Russell has represented West Indies in one Test, 56 ODIs, and 84 T20Is, accumulating 2114 runs across formats, including seven half-centuries. He has also claimed 132 international wickets.
Additionally, Russell was an integral member of the West Indies squads that emerged victorious in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016.
