Owen Set for International Debut in T20I Series
The five-match T20I series between Australia and West Indies is scheduled to commence on July 20 in Kingston, Jamaica.
Mitchell Owen is poised to make his international debut for Australia in the first T20I against the West Indies at Sabina Park this Sunday. This announcement was made by captain Mitch Marsh on the match’s eve.
Owen will be presented with T20 cap number 112 at the series opener in Kingston. This debut marks a significant achievement in the Tasmanian all-rounder’s rapid ascent over the past eight months.
Owen gained prominence during the Big Bash League (BBL) 14 season, where he achieved two centuries. Notably, he matched a record by scoring a century in just 39 balls during the final, contributing to the Hobart Hurricanes’ first BBL title.
His success domestically has paved the way for opportunities in several global leagues, including South Africa’s SA20, the Pakistan Super League (PSL), the Indian Premier League (IPL), and the United States’ Major League Cricket (MLC).
In his standout MLC season, he was named tournament MVP, having scored 313 runs and taken 14 wickets for the Washington Freedom, who finished as runners-up.
Several of Australia’s T20 regulars, such as Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, are being rested after their 3-0 Test series victory against the West Indies.
Head will also be absent from this series but is anticipated to participate in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Australia’s T20 Squad for West Indies Series:
Mitchell Marsh (captain), Sean Abbott, Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshius, Nathan Ellis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Inglis, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.
