Inflation Moderates Slightly, Driven by Fluctuating Food and Fuel Prices

Islamabad: The pace of increase in the Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation has decelerated, registering a 0.38 percent rise for the week ending July 17, 2025. This is a reduction compared to the 0.95 percent increase observed in the preceding week.

Data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) indicates notable price escalations in several key commodities, including:

  • Chicken: 8.31 percent increase
  • Eggs: 5.87 percent increase
  • Diesel: 4.15 percent increase
  • Petrol: 2 percent increase
  • Onions: 1.76 percent increase
  • Garlic: 1.70 percent increase
  • Potatoes: 1.46 percent increase
  • Firewood: 0.49 percent increase
  • Cooked Daal: 0.35 percent increase
  • Mutton and Powdered Milk: 0.31 percent each
  • Cigarettes: 0.25 percent

Conversely, price declines were noted for the following items:

  • Tomatoes: 9.34 percent decrease
  • Bananas: 1.57 percent decrease
  • LPG: 0.95 percent decrease
  • Pulse Gram: 0.31 percent decrease
  • Moong: 0.30 percent decrease
  • Wheat Flour: 0.25 percent decrease
  • Cooking Oil (5-litre): 0.21 percent decrease
  • Sugar: 0.21 percent decrease
  • IRRI-6/9: 0.05 percent decrease

Overall, during the analyzed week, the prices of 22 out of 51 items (approximately 43.14 percent) experienced an increase, while 9 items (about 17.65 percent) saw a decrease, and the remaining 20 items (roughly 39.22 percent) remained at a stable price level.

The Year-on-Year analysis demonstrates an overall decrease of 1.61 percent. Significant price reductions were evident in the following items:

  • Onions: 48.65 percent decrease
  • Tomatoes: 48.44 percent decrease
  • Electricity Charges for Q1: 37.62 percent decrease
  • Garlic: 23.17 percent decrease
  • Wheat Flour: 22.56 percent decrease
  • Maash: 20.67 percent decrease
  • Tea Lipton: 17.93 percent decrease
  • Potatoes: 13.69 percent decrease
  • Masoor: 9.02 percent decrease
  • Petrol: 1.24 percent decrease

Conversely, notable price increases were observed in the following commodities:

  • Ladies Sandal: 55.62 percent increase
  • Sugar: 27.76 percent increase
  • Moong: 17.91 percent increase
  • Beef: 14.62 percent increase
  • Gur: 12.50 percent increase
  • Vegetable Ghee (2.5kg): 12.46 percent increase
  • Vegetable Ghee (1kg): 12.32 percent increase
  • Chicken: 11.77 percent increase
  • Firewood: 10.77 percent increase
  • Bananas: 9.67 percent increase
  • Lawn Printed: 7.32 percent increase
  • Georgette: 7.20 percent increase
